The ASM Materials Education Foundation annually awards 20 grants of $500 each to help K-12 teachers bring the real world of materials science into their classrooms. “Living in a Material World” grants recognize creativity and enhance awareness of materials science and the role that materials play in society. The ASM Foundation is committed to working with and supporting teachers through “Living in a Material World” K-12 teacher grants.

Application Process
Describe a hands-on, curriculum-based K-12 project that involves student observation, teamwork, mathematics, and science skills that enhance student awareness of the everyday materials around them. We encourage you to contact local ASM International chapter members for assistance in creating imaginative, original projects that other teachers will want to emulate.

The ASM Materials Education Foundation has been delighted to receive many more proposals than can be funded. To speed the selection process, ONLY those proposals directly addressing materials science will be considered. Proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Action in Education Committee.
Please Note: A one-page summary report is required for each of the winning proposals upon completion of the project.

Application Deadline: May 25
Any applications received after the deadline will be considered in next year’s cycle. Results will be communicated to the applicants in early August.

FULBRIGHT TEACHERS FOR GLOBAL CLASSROOMS PROGRAM

2/18/2018

After our recent experiences in Hong Kong, I've got the travel bug and have been searching for other opportunities to travel, to observe/experience education abroad, and to build connections between my students and global partners.

In my searching, I came across two different opportunities through Fulbright that seem promising. I was already familiar with Fulbright's distinguished programs for college graduates (Teaching Assistantships, English Teaching Positions and Research Assistantships) and for teacher exchange. While these well-known programs provide amazing opportunities to travel, study and teach abroad, the assistantships are restricted to recent grads...and I'd been under the impression that the teacher exchange required a commitment for an extended stay abroad with housing exchange, which can be challenging for many educators (including this one that still rents her abode).  In fact, Fulbright also offers short-term global opportunities through the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program and the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program.

FULBRIGHT DISTINGUISHED AWARDS IN TEACHING SHORT-TERM PROGRAM:

Program Details

Description:
  • Participants consult with and support schools, non-profit organizations, teacher training institutions, and other educational organizations abroad.

Program Length:
  • 2-6 weeks

Grant Details:
  • The grant award provides funding for program expenses while abroad, including travel costs, lodging, meals, local transportation, and related expenses.

Application Deadline:  February 17, 2018

What is MIT SEAP?

With a heavy dose of the latest and greatest science and engineering research delivered by MIT researchers and lecturers, SEPT reaches teachers in a unique way through a drink of knowledge from the MIT "firehose."  The program captures a snapshot of MIT and delivers it to teachers for one week every summer.

  • Community-building among the outstanding group of teachers for which SEPT is known

TWO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRACKS:
MIT SEAP is offering two tracks of study. Both tracks will participate in the same morning lectures by MIT professors. Afternoon sessions will vary based by track and will be a mix of workshops, experiences, and discussions.

Track 1: "Broadening Participation in STEM" - Focus on increasing participation and supporting success of underrepresented communities in STEM

Track 2: "Bringing Project-Based Learning & Inquiry into STEM Classrooms" - Focus on integrating inquiry-based, student centered learning, voice and choice into curriculum and instruction

REGISTRATION FEE:
Tuition for the week is $1,450.00 per participant which includes:
  • Lodging in MIT dormitory housing
  • Three meals/day (campus restaurants)
