2011 American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Presentation:
Impact of a Learning Assistant Experience in a High School Physics Classroom

Background Information:
During the 2010-11 school year, Ms. Dykstra's physics
classes participated in a Learning Assistant Experience in which they designed science lessons to teach elementary students about physics concepts.  Each group of students had the opportunity to create two different lessons--the first on energy, and the second on static electricity--which they then implemented in the second grade
classroom of one of our local elementary schools.

To prepare for this experience, students learned about Backward Lesson Design, and worked in a team to decide on the essential learnings they wanted to teach.  Each group then created 5-7 minute long lessons/activities about one specific content objective,
including formative assessments to evaluate their students' learning.

Many thanks to Mr. Arturo Vasquez and his class at Federal Heights Elementary School for welcoming our students into your class--we learned so much and had such a fantastic time with you!
